Coursework for the Nursing Informatics option is aligned with the core competencies set by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). Courses include Foundations of Nursing Informatics Practice, System Design Life Cycle, Data Management and Healthcare Technology, and Leadership Development for the Advanced Nursing Professional.

Core MSN coursework expands your knowledge base in cultural perspectives, advanced research and evidence-based practice as well as current issues and trends facing professional nursing practice. A capstone will allow you to demonstrate synthesis of competencies in nursing and informatics through a master's project or thesis.

Coursework for this 32 credit-hour program is delivered 100% online with an embedded practicum in which you will work with a mentor as you complete 200 hours in the field.

Applicants to the NSU MSN in Nursing Informatics online program must hold a current, unencumbered RN license, along with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a nationally accredited nursing program with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Admission Requirements:

  • Current, unencumbered RN license
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a nationally accredited nursing program (ACEN, NEA, or CCNE) and regionally accredited college or university
  • Cumulative 2.5 GPA in undergraduate coursework or 3.0 GPA in nursing coursework

MSN in Nursing Informatics Online Admission Requirements

  • Completed application
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a nationally accredited nursing program (ACEN, NEA or CCNE) and regionally accredited college or university
  • Official transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework or a 3.0 GPA on nursing coursework

The degree plan for our Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Informatics program

Students in the MSN in Nursing Informatics online program at Northeastern State University must complete a total of 11 courses (32 credit hours), comprised of six core courses (18 credit hours), a practicum (2 credit hours, 200 hours of field work) and four Nursing Informatics option courses (12 credit hours).

You must complete the following courses.

Students will learn about the basic components of nursing and educational theories which are explored and integrated in professional nursing practice settings.

Students will learn the elements of quantitative and qualitative research processes. Evidence-based practice and research critique skills will be further developed.

Students will learn basic principles of cultural competency which are addressed with focus on regional and global populations.

Students will learn about policy decisions and related issues that shape the organization, financing, and implementation of health care services. Ethical, social, and political issues that affect the providing of education, healthcare, nursing services, communities and society are analyzed.

Students will learn about the most current trends and issues facing professional nursing practice.

Students finalize their thesis or capstone project under faculty supervision. The thesis or capstone project will be presented and defended. Students prepare for dissemination of their work for a broader audience, complete a portfolio, and consider plans for post-graduate studies. Students must re-enroll if the thesis or capstone project is not successfully presented and defended. Course may be repeated twice if additional time is needed. Prerequisite: Complete MSN core courses and 12 hours specialization courses. Concurrent enrollment allowed. Restrictions: Admission into the Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree Program. Completion of 200 hours of practicum, submission of the capstone final draft, and instructor approval. Note: May be repeated for a total of six credit hours.
Duration: 7 Weeks weeks

Students work with a preceptor and a faculty mentor to develop and practice competencies in their selected nursing option. The capstone proposal is completed and section drafts are submitted. Students must re-enroll in the course until 200 practicum hours are completed and the capstone proposal final draft is submitted. May be repeated for up to four credit hours. Credit Hours: 1-4 Other contact hours per week: Varies Prerequisite: NURS 5213 Cultural Competency: Regional and Global Perspectives, NURS 5293 Advanced Research and Evidence Based Practice for Health Professionals, and at least 6-credit hours of specialization courses. Restrictions: Students must complete the credentialing process, a preceptor agreement, and have an approved facility contract prior to receiving permission to enroll. Note: May be repeated for a total of four credit hours.

Students will learn about management and transformation of data, and the hardware, software and peripherals used in healthcare settings.
